Daughter #2 and son-in-law requested hanging bookcases for their soon to arrive baby. They saw the slings made by Megan Cooley and asked me to help out. The soon-to-be parents provided the hardware and did the hanging of the slings, I provided the sewing. The bookcases are quick to make with Megan’s directions. The applique took a little time as it has been many years since I’ve appliqued anything. The space where these slings hang would be unusable because of the closet doors so it’s a great use of space.
To do the applique I printed the letters in Microsoft Word trying different fonts, size and color. I laid each test letter down on the finished bookcase to see how I liked it. I then sent a text to the almost parents for final approval. After choosing the fabric I reprinted the letters on freezer paper in my ink jet printer. To the wrong size of the letter fabric I ironed on fusible web (I used Wonder-Under®). I ironed the freezer paper letters to the right side of the fabric. Then I could cut out the letters and remove the freezer paper. The letters were then ironed onto the bookcase fabric. I used a small zig-zag stitch all around each letter.
